There is another side to Venice that many people do not see. On the southern side of the island, a neighborhood by the name of Dorsoduro sits quietly away from the crowds. Because of the tourism, many Venetian restaurant can lack the quality meals that Italy is known for. The chances of finding better trattorias and actual Venetians are far better on this side of the Grand Canal.
Deep in Dorsoduro is the small boutique hotel Ca' San Trovaso. It sits canal-side about 15 minutes walking from the Accademia Bridge. The owner is very accommodating, but is not inside the hotel around the clock. She provides you with a code to unlock the front entrance so that you may come and go as you please. Rooms include basic amenities, and were both comfortable and clean. Breakfast is set on a table inside the room and is included in the room rate. Be sure to walk up the stair to the rooftop terrace where you look out over this quaint and quiet neighborhood. This hotel is recommended by travel guide author Rick Steves, a it did not disappoint.
